The Breville VBL050 Intelligent Blender easily tackles all of these kitchen jobs with a continuous blending design that creates a turbulent flow for maximum results. It also takes the guess-work out of the process thanks to eight clever pre-set functions. These settings are programmed based on expert knowledge from top professional chefs and are comprised of chopping, blending, pureeing, smoothies, cakes, dips, shakes and ice crushing. With these core settings, there's no need to estimate how long your blending requires, standing over the unit and checking every few seconds, helping prevent unevenly blended dishes. In addition to the eight pre-set functions, there is a variable manual speed so you can blend to your own requirements and a pulse function for short, sharp bursts of blending power. The power base unit is in a stylish white/chrome finish which neatly complements contemporary and modern-looking kitchens. Inside this base is a powerful 800 watt (W) motor which powers the serrated stainless steel blades, a material known for being less corrosive and more resistant to rusting than others and boasts antibacterial properties that keep it hygienic. Sitting on top of the unit is the plastic 1.5 litre (l) square contour jug, the unusual shape designed for continuous flow and transparent to ensure clear observation. And completing the kit is the two-piece lid enabling you to add ingredients while still blending. The unit has non-slip feet and comes with some great recipes to get you inspired in the kitchen.

Does the job better than the others I've tried

I really only want a machine that makes smoothies, so having first tried a Kenwood SB055 "SMOOTHIE 2 GO" and trashed it because most of the time it simply didn't work, and then a Philips HR1854 Juicer, which also ended up in the trash because of its enormously large, far too numerous parts that needed to be cleaned every time and because it has a very poorly designed filter that simply can't be kept clean and retains rotting mulch, I finally spent a bit more money and had a go with this Breville job.I'm fully satisfied with this machine, which is really easy to use. You just fill the top part with whatever mix of fruit and veg you want, add a suitable amount of liquid such as OJ, yoghurt, or just water, bung the top part on to the bottom part, press the "Smoothie" button and relax. The machine will automatically grind everything up, then pause for a few seconds running at a lower speed to let everything settle, then off on a second high-speed grind, then another low-speed interval, and will then stop- all by itself!So while the machine is doing its thing, you can be doing something else.Once you've figured out how much liquid to add to the fruit & veg, this machine works excellently and you can make your smoothies smoother or more liquidy depending on what you put in.Cleaning is a doddle. There are only 2 parts and they can be rinsed under the tap (the jug and lid).The only thing is that although the instruction booklet says you shouldn't use carrots, carrots are essential in smoothies so I use them anyway. It also says that you shouldn't use really soft things like bananas.The only defect I have encountered so far with this otherwise first-class machine is a slightly unpleasant burning smell coming from the motor - even if you don't run the machine for long. I wonder if this will become a problem?But so far, so tasty. I'd recommend this machine.

I got my one from the Amazon Warehouse section for £53 and I have to say I think it's very good value for money. It's sturdy and nice looking. It makes a lot of noise but that's fair for a 800w motor.

I had a Breville for ten years or so and it did the job well enough. Of recent I have been using it a lot and needed to retire it to the bin, You will be sadly missed old friend. Why move to another brand? The VBL050 is even better so far. I Only use it to make smoothies. It does a great job and just as important easy to clean. I have only had it about a week and so far it's top. What more can I say great value and I would recommend it.
